Saturday February 24, 8.30-4.00
An exploration of erotic feelings that emerge in both patient and therapist in the course of psychoanalytic treatment, providing both a contemporary theoretical and clinical understanding.

Sexual Boundary Violations: How do they happen?
Sunday February 24, 9.00-12.30
A presentation based on Dr Celenza’s extensive experience working with sexual boundary violations that have occurred in clinical contexts. Relevant to therapists, psychologists, social workers, analysts, psychiatrists, pastoral and school counsellors, and professionals involved in responding to sexual boundary violations.

Erotic Dynamics in Psychotherapy
Some form of erotic transferences of whatever shape generally make their way into every therapy
or analysis, yet our theories have become desexualized to an extent that fails to prepare clinicians with the necessary armamentarium to cope with the level of desire and erotic material likely to emerge. This workshop aims to address the deficiency in our literature and theories of technique and to encourage more open discussion about erotic transferences in all of their manifestations.

In particular, Dr Celenza will discuss the varieties and meanings of the therapist’s countertransference over
the course of a psychoanalytic process. She will discuss the analysis of a range of erotic transferences in terms of the therapist’s point of view (or countertransference), and how these countertransference experiences aid the therapist in understanding unconscious factors in the patient’s experience. In addition, the possibility of healthy erotic interplay will be discussed along with the boundary issues surrounding self-disclosure.

Sexual Boundary Violations: How Do They Occur?
Prevalence studies consistently reveal an unacceptably high incidence rate (9-12%) of erotic contact between therapists and patients among mental health practitioners. This workshop presents the problem of sexual boundary violations among mental health practitioners and other relationships that contain an inherent power imbalance. Such relationships include therapist/client, supervisor/ supervisee, teacher/student and clergy/parishioner. The form of the workshop is multi-media and is designed to encourage audience participation.
Findings from empirical studies on prevalence precursors, risk factors, and prevention will be reviewed. This workshop is relevant to the full spectrum of mental health professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counsellors. Professionals involved in responding to professional boundary violations will also find this workshop informative.
