14.00-16.30         A dialogue between Ana and John on Ana’s film “Blessed”. The film tracks seven children over the course of 24 hours as they roam the suburbs and backstreets of Melbourne; then revisits the same 24 hours from the mothers’ perspective. In doing so, Ana provides an exploration of the primal, but also fraudulent, relationship between the parents and children. Faced with the vulnerability of their parents, mostly single mothers, the children are equally vulnerable and prone to serious harm. The film highlights their plight, as well as the hope that nevertheless is present, despite the serious breakdown in parent-child relationships. Ana will introduce the film from the Director’s point of view and discuss the process of the creation of her film and characters. John will look at the film in the way an analyst looks at a dream, and use this perspective to highlight some of the central themes. Excerpts from “Blessed” will be used to illustrate the discussion points
