When Freud meets the Buddha –integrating
Analytic Psychotherapy and Buddhist Psychology

Presented by Dr Eng-Kong Tan

Eng-Kong will first give a historical perspective of how psychoanalysts have encountered Buddhism. He will then delineate how the Psychotherapies and Buddhist Practices converge and diverge as healing traditions. Contemporary psychoanalytic views and discourses on Buddhist Psychology and Therapeutics will be considered. He will offer an overview of the two-year Professional Training Course run by the Australian Association of Buddhist Counsellors and Psychotherapists”. And finally, he will present how he has integrated Buddhism and Psychotherapy in his practice of a Mindfulness-Based Analytic Psychotherapy.

Dr Eng-Kong Tan is a psychiatrist and analytic psychotherapist. A member of NSWIPP since 1983 he was a member of its Training Advisory Board for some years as well as the Chair of Training of the PPAA. He visited interstate branches of PPAA to unify and improve training standards. He was also in the Faculty of Training of ANZAP in its early years, teaching and forming interstate training branches. Subsequently, as Chair of the Binational Section of Psychotherapy of the RANZCP he was again teaching and unifying Australian and New Zealand psychiatrists in psychotherapy.
Eleven years ago, Eng-Kong founded AABCAP - the Australian Association of Buddhist Counsellors and Psychotherapists. He became its first Director of Training of a 2 year Professional Training Course in Buddhism & Psychotherapy. Eng-Kong has taught and presented keynote addresses, workshops and seminars on Individual and Group Analytic Psychotherapy, Spirituality, Buddhism, Mindfulness and Meditations in Australia and overseas over the last 40 years. He has been conferred an Adjunct Professorship by Nan Tien Institute at Wollongong which is working towards being Australia’s first Buddhist University.
