Mentalisation Baseed Treatment Basic Course

MENTALISATION BASED TREATMENT
BASIC COURSE

For Borderline and Other Personality Disorders

MBT In collaboration with Peter Fonagy
Professor Bateman has developed and manualised an innovative treatment for personality disorder, Mentalisation Based Treatment – MBT. As a result of promising clinical trials and related emerging evidence, MBT is being taught and implemented internationally in the treatment of personality disorders.

Mentalising is the process by which we make sense of each other and ourselves, implicitly and explicitly, in terms of subjective states and mental processes. (Bateman & Fonagy, 2013). Mentalising is how we interpret the actions of ourselves and others as meaningful by understanding the internal states which underlie behaviour.

Mentalisation based treatment was developed based on studies of early childhood development and attachment. This workshop will equip participants to understand:
 How mentalising handicaps derive from early parent-child interactions
 How mentalising failures reflect and cause insecure attachments
 How psychotherapeutic interventions are efforts to correct mentalising and attachment handicaps

MBT Training
Participants will learn how to implement MBT techniques within their clinical practice as a specialist treatment. Techniques will be learned that enhance the client’s and the therapist’s mentalising. Common clinical situations are discussed and ‘role played’ to practise skills. MBT requires therapists to focus on the patient’s mental state and on their understanding of interactions with the patient. The therapist stance is of particular importance and differs from the usual therapist stance.
