Treating individuals who have been relationally traumatized presents numerous challenges
and opportunities for clinicians and researchers. In this seminar we propose to highlight the
complex psychopathology caused by relational trauma – attachment, betrayal, impersonal,
cumulative trauma and Complex trauma.

Acute Stress Disorder, Post -Traumatic Stress Disorder and the importance of distinguishing
it on its own or co-morbid with Complex Traumatic Stress cannot be overstated. This is most
relevant to the treatment of borderline personality disorder, which will be discussed. The
importance of diagnosis and particularly co-morbidity, in patients so affected, is
emphasised, in order that appropriate management is put in place.

Our Speakers:
Dr Joan Haliburn is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and psychotherapist, in private
practice, clinical senior lecturer, Psychiatry, University of Sydney and V.M.O. Complex
