SCIARPP presents its Building Bridges Series

SCIARPP invites you to the third presentation in the

Building Bridges Series

Saturday 19 July 2014 with a video of

Stephen Mitchell

presenting some of his most interesting and innovative ideas.

Stephen Mitchell was the founding voice of what has come to be known as

Relational Psychoanalysis. With his groundbreaking 1988 book “Relational Concepts

in Psychoanalysis”, Mitchell proposed an integration of object-relations and

interpersonal psychoanalysis. At the time, this was a radical shift from drive-based

psychoanalytic theories. At the heart of his thinking is that the individual mind is

fundamentally and irreducibly relational: it emerges and is shaped by early relational

experiences and remains embedded in relational contexts.

Mitchell is credited with beginning a radical paradigm shift in psychoanalysis from a

“one-person” psychology to a “two-person” psychology. Mitchell argued that the

analyst’s particular personal subjectivity is inevitably implicated in shaping what

transpires, even when the analyst thinks he is being abstinent or neutral.

Perhaps Mitchell’s greatest contribution was his vision to create an organisation

which would welcome difference and promote dialogue between the many relational

psychoanalytic models, including Object Relations, Interpersonal Psychoanalysis,

Self-Psychology and others. The journal he founded, Psychoanalytic Dialogues, is

one of the outcomes of this vision.

The Building Bridges Series was initiated by the Institute of Child and Adolescent

Psychotherapy (ICAPP) in 2013, with the aim of exploring and highlighting the

communality of thinking within the different psychodynamic orientations. It provides

attendees with the rare opportunity to meet and discuss ideas with people from

various organisations in Sydney involved in this work.

We will be screening a recording of a talk by Stephen Mitchell in which he

articulates some of the key points in his development of Relational thinking. A

panel of clinicians from a range of psychoanalytic approaches will be present to

engage in a discussion of these ideas from various theoretical perspectives and

in dialogue with the audience.

SCIARPP hopes this seminar will help to further the sort of open dialogue Mitchell

advocated.
