ACPA presents Managing Difficult Reactions to Psychotherapy Clients

Managing Difficult Reactions to Psychotherapy Clients Professor Jeffrey A. Hayes Pennsylvania State University

Liverpool Hospital TRMEC Conference Facilities Auditorium (Entrance A, corner of Elizabeth and Goulburn Streets, Liverpool NSW 2170) Friday, February 23, 2018

9:00 am to 1:00 pm

All psychologists experience difficult reactions to clients that interfere with the process and outcome of therapy. Historically, these reactions have been referred to as “countertransference.” Understanding the causes of countertransference reactions can make them less likely to occur in the future. In addition, using specific strategies can help therapists manage these reactions when they do occur to minimize their negative effects.

This workshop is suitable for all mental health professionals engaging in psychological therapy with clients. It will draw from clinical examples, research, film illustrations, and theory so that participants will be able to:

  •   Understand the role of countertransference in various theoretical approaches

  •   Translate research findings into clinical practice

  •   Apply a five-factor model of countertransference to help manage difficult reactions to clients

  •   Understand the role of reflective practice in the management of countertransference reactions
