ANZAP in Conjunction with ACPA
Announce a joint seminar
Paranoia: From a Dimension of Personality to Florid
Psychotic Illness: Theory and Psychotherapy
Presented by Dr Nancy McWilliams &
Dr Michael Garrett (both USA)
The evening’s presentations will focus on the topic of the schizoid spectrum, from high-functioning introverted people to individuals with schizophrenia. Dr McWilliams will present during the first half of the seminar, and discuss working with healthier people with schizoid dynamics. Dr Garrett will present during the last half of the seminar on how ordinary therapists in time-limited situations can help psychotic people via therapy, not just medication.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Dr Nancy McWilliams teaches at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology and has a private practice in Flemington, NJ. She is author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis (1994; rev. ed. 2011), Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (1999), and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (2004), all with Guilford Press. She has edited or contributed to several other books, and is Associate Editor of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (2006; rev. ed. due 2016). She is a former president of the Division of Psychoanalysis (39) of the American Psychological Association and is on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Psychology. A graduate of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, Dr. McWilliams is also affiliated with the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey and the National Training Program of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York City.
Dr Michael Garrett is Vice Chairman of Psychiatry at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, where he is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry. He received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and completed his residency training in Psychiatry at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. Most of Dr. Garrett's professional career has been spent in the public psychiatry sector, first at North Central Bronx Hospital, in 1995. In 1997 he became Deputy Director of Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital, where he was responsible for clinical services.
Dr Garrett has an interest in the difficulties clinicians encounter when trying to develop a relationship with psychotic individuals who have a fundamentally different view of reality than the clinician. He has a particular interest in combined psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural treatments of schizophrenia. His academic and research interests also include the voice hearing experience, lack of insight in psychosis, and the relationship between psychosis and ordinary mental processes. His chapter on psychotherapy for psychosis will appear in the next edition of Kaplan & Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry
