Chair's report

Dear Colleagues,

When I am writing this is still close enough to the new year to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Having just returned from a break this report will be brief. Thanks to the support of many people, the Federal Government did not introduce any changes to the Medicare Safety Net. Whilst this issue took up time for the binational Committee last year, there were a number of other important issues and events last year which the Committee has been busy working on including:

  • Achievement of Faculty status; A very important issue that the Committee are meeting in early February about is the process for foundation Accredited membership. We appreciate that this is a very important issue for members.

  • Thanks again to the Victorian Branch of the Faculty of Psychotherapy and Melbourne Association for Psychodynamic Psychiatry for inviting and hosting me to an evening in Melbourne in October. A key message for me to impart is that we are the Faculty and thanks to colleagues who are taking an active role in Faculty affairs.

  • This week, on behalf of the Committee, I have sent invitations to Chairs of the Trainee Representative Committee, the Community Collaboration Committee and the New Zealand National Committee to nominate a representative to the binational Committee.

  • The annual Psychotherapy Conference; A very big thank you to Ilana Nayman, Jenny Randles and Paul Foulkes for organising a very successful Conference this year and thanks to the large number of members who came to Coolum for an excellent Conference. Planning has already started for this year.

In closing, a reminder that at the College Congress in Hong Kong (May 8-12) there will be significant psychotherapy content including a pre-Congress workshop by Dr Frank Yeomans on Transference Focussed Psychotherapy. We are also hopeful of having a joint social function with the local Hong Kong colleagues with an interest in psychotherapy.

Best wishes

Michael Daubney
Chair, Bi-national Committee, Faculty of Psychotherapy

From the Editor

Dear colleagues,

Happy New Year to everyone. My best wishes for the coming year.

This newsletter is coming out in January instead of December because of other concerns and commitments in December. As it turned out I have received a few interesting flyers in the last couple of weeks and have included them here in this newsletter. Perhaps January would be a better time for the newsletter to go out in future. I will consider this.

I recently received an email from the international representative of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Faculty of Medical Psychotherapy. This reminds me to let you know that Member Services keeps a list of subscribers to their newsletter. If you would like to receive the newsletter, the person to contact is jessica.stephens@ranzcp.org.

The last few months have been extremely hectic due to the MBS Review and concerns about the new Medicare Safety Net. Thanks to Michael Daubney for representing the Section and the College on our behalf at the Senate inquiry. Thanks also to Shirley Prager and Gil Anaf who represented Psychiatry through the National Association of Patent Practitioners (NAPP). The Hansard Transcript makes interesting reading. As you would be aware the Government has deferred consideration of the Safety Net; this will now be considered as part of the MBS Review. A meeting to update and provide information on what changes are proposed to the MBS has been planned for Feb 11 in Canberra at AMA House.

Information about this year’s Faculty conference has been included below; the Conference Committee has decided to depart from the usual focus on the individual to explore the psychological processes that work in groups and organizations. We are excited to announce the conference will be run in collaboration with the College's Section of Leadership and Management whose Committee Chair, Dr Nick O’Connor will be involved in planning details. Details will be forwarded once these have been worked out.

Technology now presents us with some amazing opportunities, doesn't it? I have included some details about an upcoming webinar from the International Asociation for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (IARPP) on Somatic Experience in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. The IARPP offers Webinars which are both interesting and informative. A paper is circulated and then discussed online. If you would like to take part you will need to become an IARPP member (but the subscription isn't expensive). There are also some links to podcasts - I recommend the very interesting interview with Adam Phillips. Enjoy!

If you come across any podcasts or film clips that you think others will find interesting please consider sending them in for inclusion in the Newsletter.

With best wishes

Chair’s Report, Sub-committee for advanced training in Psychotherapies Psychiatry (SATPSY)

The Advanced Training Certificate in Psychotherapies continues to be popular amongst registrars and Fellows across many regions in Australia and New Zealand. Many regions are successfully incorporating training and supervision components from other national and international centres of excellence in psychotherapy. Most aspects of the Certificate have been adapted to the new 2012 training regulations.

As such, there will be a process of transition from the 2003 to 2012 regulations, and the transition matrix for this has been released on the college website. All features of the 2012 regulations have also been released. For the Advanced Training Certificate, this includes the new EPAs for psychotherapy, as well as a new case based discussion process and logbook of prescribed cases. Some of these EPAs will also be available for generalist stage 3 trainees to undertake, along with 3 mandated short term psychotherapy cases. All of this is described on the College website.

Our committee is currently developing a Guidebook to assist with all of these changes, and the hope is that this Guidebook will also to make the approach to psychotherapy in College training intelligible and appealing. The Advanced Training Certificate and all the psychotherapy components included in stage 1,2 and 3 training of the new 2012 program, will be described in this Psychotherapy Guidebook. This guidebook, along with regional education sessions, will assist supervisors and trainees to adapt to the new regulations. It will also give practical tips around advancing psychotherapy skills, understanding and experiences throughout college training, including how to approach supervision and get the most out of the various training cases undertaken, especially the Psychological Methods Written Case (ie the 40 session 'Long Case'). It is anticipated that the Guidebook will be available some time in the next few months.
