Many people enter the field of psychiatry and related fields of mental health with an interest in
“understanding people” and, indeed, in “understanding mental life”. In our studies we are confronted with a
voluminous literature and a lot of uncertainty.
This talk will be about maintaining a questioning and inquiring mind in our approach to work. When one
considers what philosophical attitudes and approaches are most relevant to clinical work, one finds that
“research” is as relevant in the consulting room as it is in the laboratory.
Dr McLean will give examples of psychiatric research that keeps the person and the body in mind. Dr
Crisante will lead a workshop where trainees can take their research idea or proposal ‘out for a spin’.
