WORKING AT THE EXTREME EDGE: THE LEGACY OF DONALD WINNICOTT

9.00am for 9.30am start, finishing 11.30am

Woolcock Institute, 431 Glebe Point Road

“Rape and being eaten by cannibals... are mere bagatelles compared with the violation of the self’s central core.” [Winnicott, "Communicating and not communicating", 1963, p.187]
While we talk of the intergenerational legacy of trauma we sometimes overlook the intergenerational legacy of healing.

The originality and creativity of D. W. Winnicott, his emphasis on the spontaneous gesture and the search for ‘the real,’ as well as his concept of ‘the good enough mother’, have radically altered the way in which we deal with those patients who come to us and who co- exist in a state of ‘primary undifferentiated being.’

This has become a key contribution to the way in which we have modified psychoanalytic technique to meet the needs of such severely regressed patients. This paper attempts to trace the legacy of D.W. Winnicott through clinical psychotherapeutic work with a severely traumatised borderline psychotic patient.
