PUBLIC LECTURE OCTOBER 2011
British Psychoanalyst Dr. David Taylor
27th October 2011
Dr. David Taylor will give a paper "Consenting to be Robbed so as not to be Murdered: a Psychoanalytic Approach to the Understanding and Treatment of Chronic, ‘Treatment-resistant’ forms of Depression" , at Melbourne Institute for Psychoanalysis, 400 Tooronga Road, Hawthorn East 3123 at8.00pm
David Taylor is a training and supervising analyst and Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and has a private practice. For several years he taught the Institute of Psychoanalysis curriculum course on the work of Bion. He is also the clinical Director of the Tavistock Adult Depression study and has lectured and supervised widely.
The presentation is based on Dr. Taylor’s experience as clinical director of the Tavistock Adult Depression study. This random-allocation controlled trial is in the process of assessing the value of eighteen months of weekly psychoanalytic psychotherapy (60 sessions) delivered by experienced psychoanalysts as a treatment for chronic, disabling forms of depression. The comparison control is a ‘treatment as usual’ condition. The final sample of 129 patients has now been recruited to the trial and the last few patients are completing their therapy and entering the two year follow-up. Outcome findings will be reported in 2013. This presentation will describe some of the clinical findings of the study, and discuss the challenges of carrying out a formal outcome trial of a psychoanalytic therapy with a clinically significant form of depression. It will discuss the phenomenon and function of depression as a whole.
