2O14 Conference
STIRRINGUP PREHISTORIC TIME: EPIGENETICS, TRAUMATIC RUPTURE AND REPAIR
18-2O August 2O14 Hong Kong Academy of Medicine
ANNOUNCEMENT& CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
CLOSING DATEFORRECEIPT OFABSTRACTS:
24 MARCH 2O14
The adaptation to traumatic events leads to early patterning of relational distress that is transmitted transgenerationally.
Epigenetics is the paradigm in which we explore the persistence of ancient traumatic rupture in current relationships. It in turn reframes our understanding of rupture and repair in interpersonal relationships.
This conference will focus on how epigenetics can inform psychoanalytic discussion on topics such as gratitude and forgiveness, disturbances in parenting and, in turn, how this might benefit our patients.
We invite papers exploring the conference theme, in particular the repercussions of early trauma and the therapeutic endeavours used to deal with these.

… inside us we haven’t loved just some one in the future, but a fermenting tribe; not just one child, but fathers, cradled inside us like ruins of mountains, the dry river bed of former mothers, yes, and all that soundless landscape under its clouded or clear destiny – girl, all this came before you. And you yourself, how could you know – you’ve stirred up prehistoric time in your lover."
Rainer Maria Rilke, Duino Elegies, the third elegy

DINNER VENUE
The Verandah Restaurant, Repulse Bay
The Repulse Bay residential community and The Verandah Restaurant are built on the former site of Hong Kong’s famous Repulse Bay Hotel (1920–1982).
In its 62-year history, the hotel was the centre of charm, chic and the Charleston. Not only was it a popular holiday spot for locals, it was also a favourite haunt for expatriates working in the Far East and a choice destination for international travellers.
Royalty and celebrities found refuge at the hotel including George Bernard Shaw and Noel Coward. Actor Marlon Brando was a guest in the 1950’s. Spain’s Crown Prince Juan Carlos and Crown Princess Sofia spent their honeymoon here while other royal guests included Prince Axel of Denmark and Prince Peter of Greece. The hotel was immortalised in the Hollywood classic "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" and the Oscar-winning "Coming Home" which was partly filmed in the hotel’s Reading Room.
The Repulse Bay residential community of today continues to be an oasis of tranquility and nostalgia, offering the style and service of a bygone era.
