Woody Allen, Psychoanalysis and Love:
Between Wishing and Disappointment
The Sydney Institute for Psychoanalysis
is pleased to announce a Film Triptych to be presented by
Professor Jorge Ulnik (Buenos Aries)
Couples, between wishing and disappointment / Psychoanalysis and love /Death, sexuality and the human existential drama ….. these three fundamental issues will be discussed using a triptych of Woody Allen’s films: You Will Meet A Tall, Dark Stranger Annie Hall Deconstructing Harry
All comedians make use of humour as a tool to establish a distance with the dramas of life. In this way suffering is turned into something funny. Woody Allen’s creativity adds the references of psychoanalysis to this resource, as one of his main devices to make people laugh … and to think. His characters look at the camera and talk to us … if we mix layers of reality, as Woody Allen usually does in his work, we have the possibility, through his movies, to analyse him, his characters, and life itself at the same time.
Prof. Jorge C. Ulnik is a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association and a Training and Supervising Analyst with the Argentine Psychoanalytical Association. He is Professor of Pathophysiology and Psychosomatic Diseases in the School of Psychology at Buenos Aires University and Staff Teacher in the Postgraduates Department of the University Favaloro (Buenos Aires). He is the author of the book ‘Skin in Psychoanalysis’ published by Karnac Books, London, 2007. He participates annually as a lecturer in the cycle ‘Cinema and Psychoanalysis’ organized by the Cajamurcia Foundation in Murcia, Spain.
