The Sydney Institute for Psychoanalysis presents a public lecture entitled Defending Damaging Developing by Dr Jeanne Magagna

 

This talk will describe some of the conflictual issues faced in psychotherapy by young people with anorexia nervosa. The process of working with unprocessed implicit memories and transforming them into experiences which can be thought about in a present moment in psychotherapy will be illustrated with drawings, clinical vignettes and theoretical queries about the nature of transformation through psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

 

 

Dr Jeanne Magagna has worked for many years in psychiatric in-patient units at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Ellernmede Centre for Eating Disorders in London, England. During this time she has been particularly involved in groups for both parents and young people with eating disorders, psychotherapy with their families as well as individual psychotherapy. She has specialized in work integrating infant observation with psychotherapeutic work with children who do not walk, talk or eat. Dr Magagna has trained and qualified in child, family and adult psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic in London, and is Joint Coordinator of the Tavistock Model Child Psychotherapy Trainings in Florence and Venice, Italy.

Her publications include jointly editing ‘Psychotherapy with Families’, ‘Intimate Transformations: Babies with their Families’ as well as editing ‘Universals in Psychoanalysis’ … ‘Communicating without Words: Psychotherapy with the Silent Child’ is soon to be published
